Sasmira (SIDT) launches Fashion Design & Textile Design Programs

The Synthetic Art Silk Mills’ Research Association (SASMIRA)

The Synthetic & Art Silk Mills’ Research Association (SASMIRA) is a co-operative venture set-up by the Man-Made Textile Industry of India as a multi-functional institute to serve its scientific and technological needs. SASMIRA was established in the year 1950 after due recognition by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Later it was linked to the Ministry of Textiles. Commencing with the testing of silk and art silk materials, SASMIRA has geared its activities since then to meet the changing needs of the Man Made Textile Industry and now in the field of Technical Textiles there by fulfilling its objectives. The land mark building of SASMIRA at Worli is in the heart of the city of Mumbai, the imposing building covers nearly 12, 000 sq.mts. area.

SASMIRA is engaged in activities viz. Research & Development, Centre of Excellence for Agro Textiles, Testing Services/Technical Services/ Consultancy, Textile Instrument Development, Educational Activities, Publication, etc. with the prime objective of rendering Scientific & Technical assistance to the Textile Industry, thereby assisting its growth and development. It has various institutes under its aegis: namely Sasmira’s Institute of Manmade Textiles (SIMMT), Sasmira’s Institute of Management Studies & Research (SIMSR), Sasmira’s Institute of Commerce & Science (SICS), and Sasmira’s Business School (SBS). This academic year SASMIRA has launched the SASMIRA’s INSTITUTE OF DESIGN AND TEXTILES (SIDT).

The SASMIRA’S Education and Training Program (SETP), was renamed as SASMIRA’s Institute of Design and Textiles (SIDT) in the year 2021. For over two decades, SETP has aided many young designers and merchandisers to achieve a successful career in the Fashion/ Textile industry.

SIDT is conducting the Bachelor’s Degree Programs & PG Programs in collaboration with University of Mumbai – Garware Institute of Career Education and Development (GICED) in Fashion Design, Textile Design and Apparel Merchandising. It also conducts Masters Diploma Programs in Fashion Design & Fashion Management in collaboration with Istituto Italiano Design (IID), Italy. In addition, SIDT conducts various full time & part time Industry Oriented Diploma & Certificate Courses.

Sasmira’s Institute of Design & Textiles Sasmira’s Institute of Design & Textiles (SIDT) launches B. Des – Fashion Design & Textile Design Programs

Academic Year 2021 – 2022 brings an array of opportunities to design enthusiasts.

Sasmira’s Institute of Design and Textiles (SIDT) has introduced Bachelor of Design in Fashion Designing (B. Des in FD) and Textile Designing (B. Des in TD) programs from this academic year. These programs would be conducted in collaboration with the University of Mumbai’s –Garware Institute of Career Education & Development (UM-GICED).

In recent years, B. Des program has gained increasing demand as it gives students an opportunity to pursue their creative interest as a stream for graduation. There are very few institutes in India, even less in Mumbai, like NIFT, NID that offer B. Des degree which is recognized worldwide. SIDT has joined the league by offering this distinct opportunity to aspiring students.

  1. Des by SIDT is a 3-year unique degree program designed by panel of Industry experts, Designers and Academicians for holistic development of students as designers. The course would focus on building design thinking ability, skill enhancement along with the necessary field exposure through various theory subjects, practical classes, research projects, industrial and craft visits, workshops, seminars, internships, and fashion show. The two streams – Fashion Design and Textile Design, offer students the opportunity to specialize in the field of their choice of design studies.

SIDT’s Annual Fashion show “Enchanté” is a professional platform for the final year design students to showcase their fashion collection. The show is graced by the presence of many renowned designers and celebrities from the industry.

After the completion of B.Des. program from SIDT, one can have a plenty of job opportunities such as Designer for Fashion Brands or for reputed Design House, Graphic Designer, Print Developer, Fashion Merchandiser, Retail Buyer, Fashion Marketer, Fashion Journalist Quality Controller, or one may pursue higher education in India or abroad if they aspire. SIDT will facilitate placement process for all the eligible candidates.

The first batch of B. Des will commence from August 2021, the admissions for these courses are already open. Those who have completed 12th standard from any recognized board, in any stream, can apply for B. Des program at SIDT. They would have to appear for Entrance Exam and clear a round of Personal Interview conducted by SIDT & UM-GICED to pursue the degree program.

Along with these newly introduced B. Des and International Masters Diploma programs, SIDT offers many other full time and part time courses in Designing & Merchandising. Sasmira’s Institute of Design & Textiles (SIDT) launches Master Diploma Programs in collaboration with Istituto Italiano Design (IID), Italy

SIDT launched its international venture from this academic year. Today, in any stream of education, especially in the dynamic field of design, international exposure is necessary for students. With this objective, SIDT has introduced 1- year Masters Diploma Programs in Fashion Management and Fashion Design in collaboration with Istituto Italiano Design (IID) – a renowned Italian Design institute from Perugia, Italy.

Italy being a fashion hub, IID works closely with many fashion houses and industries which help the students to get required practical and field training as well as placement opportunities. The institute is associated with distinguished Fashion Designers and famous Fashion Brand owners based in European countries, which mentor IID students and conduct lectures/ modules on their area of expertise. Association with an institute like IID gives a strong advantage to SIDT to successfully run its international programs.

The course structure for these Masters Diploma programs is customized considering the special needs of Indian students and is one of the most cost friendly international programs available in the market. Along with online theory classes by experts from IID, the student will be allowed to pursue 3 months of practical training and internships at Istituto Italiano Design (IID), Italy.

After completion of Master Diploma program one can have plenty of job opportunities abroad or in India such as: Fashion Designer with Fashion Brand or International Design House, Fashion Merchandiser, Retail Buyer, Fashion Brand Manager, Fashion Journalist, or one may start their own business venture.

The first batch of these Masters Diploma programs would commence in the month of September 2021, the admissions for these courses are already open.

Interested candidates who have formal education in design can apply for these courses. Also, graduates of any stream, with passion and flare for design is eligible to apply. A strong design portfolio is what is required to get selected for the program.
